Reflective Synopsis

Over the last 6 week I have been introduced to a number of ICT tools that we can consider using in the classroom. ‘Through the online system, we should recognize the importance of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in online system of teaching and learning or e-learning’( Kaware & Sain 2015). As we are in a society where a majority of our activities, communications and everyday daily tasks, such as banking, are all online e-learning has become an important aspect of the 21st Century classroom.

Through the exploration of Information Communication Technologies I have found that they play a very important role in the classroom today. Most students in a classroom will know how to use online tools. As technology evolves and more tools become accessible to students around the world, e-learning is an essential aspect of teaching today.

The learning theories of Constuctivism, Cognitivism and Connectivism relate to e-learning. E-learning allows students to create their own knowledge though experience such as sharing ideas. This is a demonstration of the learning theory Constructivism. Students are able to acquire and process information from e-learning. There is so much information available at their finger-tips to enhance the learning experience. This process of acquiring information is an example of Cognitivism. With e-learning students are able to connect with other students worldwide to collaborate ideas or gain a better understanding of a topic being taught at school. The process of connecting with others is an example of Connectivism.  Having so much information available to students on topics creates a world where they need to take charge of their own learning. For example, there are applications available online for students who are struggling to assist them in improving their knowledge and skills on a particular subject.

After investigating a number of ICT’s the two tools that I find that could be incorporated successfully into a lesson is a Wiki or a Prezi. To choose the right ICT for a lesson the SAMR model can assist us in choosing an ITC that creates opportunities for students that would be beneficial to their learning outcomes. ‘SAMR provides us with a critical framework for assessing the richness of the technology task itself’ (Kirkland. AB, 2014, p. 15). SAMR was used to evaluate the Wiki and Prezi in previous blogs.

There are many benefits that are associated with ICT’s. With so many applications being available online there are benefits such as access to learning 24/7. If students are unable to attend school due to illness they can still access the information needed for them to learn from home, meaning that they can still participate in school and not fall behind. This will be especially important for students who have disabilities or illnesses that require them to be away from school for long periods of time. The negative aspect of ICT’s are the time associated with monitoring the online activities, students not staying on topic and the possibilities of online bullying and inappropriate use of an application.
With using ICT’s it is very important that guidelines are put in place. Most schools have a policy on ICT’s and the guidelines that need to be adhered too. However, it is also important to instruct your class on the rules and expectations you have with the ICT’s (that keep within the guidelines and policies of the school you are working for). Students can misuse ICT’s in ways such as going off topic, bullying and inappropriate behavior online. For any ICT to be used successfully in the classroom also needs to be used correctly by staff and students. Other issues that are to be considered are the issue of copyright. Student s need to know that it is important to reference any work they used, whether it be a YouTube video or an image, in their work.

Cyber Safety is another important issue. With so many activities online these days as a teacher it is up to us to decide whether or not an ICT we choose will be appropriate for the lesson, the risks involved, and also gaining permissions from the school. Students need to have knowledge of what Cyber safety is and how they can protect themselves.

Throughout the last 5 weeks investigating ICT’s, I have gained knowledge and insight into the importance and benefits ICT’s in the classroom. As a 21st Century learner ICT’s can assist students in their learning journeys by creating an engaging and interactive learning environment that has endless possibilities.

Reflection 5 - Week 6

Wow!
So many ICT's to look at this week. It was quite overwhelming seeing the long list of tools that we could potentially use as teachers in the classroom. After having a look through the tools that were listed I am focusing my blog on Google Earth.

When I started looking at Google Earth and its functionality in the classroom, my 9 year old saw the application and thought it was fantastic. His comment 'That is cool! That will be great for Geography. I'm going to tell my teacher about Google Earth when I get back school.' It was great to see that is was an interesting concept. I see that this can be a great tool for all ages.

I have used Google maps before, however, not Google Earth. I found it to be exciting and interesting and instantly saw that it can be used for many subject areas. Google Earth gives you access to visual information and access to anywhere in the world without having to leave the classroom. How great is that! Students will have the opportunity to explore numerous places with Google Earth.

While exploring Google Earth I thought about how I could incorporate it into my subject areas. Here are just a few of the many ideas:
Source: Google Images
Mathematics - using the ruler tool in Google Earth students can measure distances. It can be measure measuring the distance from one place to another or measuring the area of a piece of land or a building to later on find the area.

Business Studies - Google Earth can be used as an exercise of seeing where in the world an Organisation operates in the world my marking the offices/sites of the organisation on Google Earth.

The website Real World Math is a great website to accompany Google Earth. It gives some great ideas of what you can use Google Earth for in a lesson. Follow the link to Real World Math to see how many possibilities there are with Google Earth.

SAMR

In the Enhancement stage of the SAMR model Google Earth can substitute atlases, globes and maps.

In the Transformative stage Google Earth allows you to get up close satellite views of any part of the world that you are researching. Students can visually see the landscape of mountains and measure accurate distances of areas instead of relying on pictures and books. It gives students access to the World without having to leave their classroom.

PMI

Plus
  • Google Earth can be used for a variety of subject areas.
  • It is free to download
  • Easy to navigate
  • Great functions
Minuses
Source: Google Images
  • Students can get easily distracted from the task they have been assigned to do.
  • The satellite images are few years behind. Some visuals may be inaccurate.
Interesting
  • You can view satellite images of the Moon and Mars.
  • You can view the galaxy
  • Google Earth can take you anywhere in the world.

Reflection 4 - Week 5

This week my mind was in tangles over all these ICT tools. I am amazed at how many ICT’s there are available to us as teachers for the classroom. I was introduced again to new ICT’s with the Prezi and Glogster. I had never heard of or even known they existed until this week. I learnt some new capabilities of PowerPoint such as the 3D format.

From what I understand of Glogster it is an online scrapbooking tool that can be used to make posters. It is an interactive tool that can incorporate the use of text, images and videos.

This is the first time I have heard of Glogster. It looks to be an engaging ICT tool that can be used for many classroom activities. Your imagination would be limitless when it came to designing a Glogster.

PowerPoint is a great ICT to use for presentations and constructing lessons. It is a very functional tool however, it can be limiting. After looking at PowerPoint and then Prezi I found Prezi to be a fantastic tool that offered so much more.

With Prezi offering the ability to add minute details, such as answers to a math problem, students can be presented with a problem without seeing the answer straight away. It is like being able to hide details and present them when needed. For this reason, my focus for this week’s blog is on Prezi.

It was a bit of a challenge at first but once I watched a couple of tutorials and had a go I figured out how to use it fairly quickly. My attempt at Prezi is very basic and I believe there will be so much more that I could do with Prezi as part of a lesson. With more time and practice with Prezi it can be a great tool in the classroom.

The Prezi I designed is How to Calculate the area of a compound shape. I have attempted to embed the Prezi in my blog, with technology, it does not always go the way you had planned. I have also hyperlinked it aswell just in case embedding the Prezi did not work properly.

Prezi - Area of a Compound Shape

 SAMR

In the enhancement stage of the SAMR model (substitution and augmentation); Prezi can be a substitute for handouts and writing examples on the board. You can have your examples already prepared and set for a lesson without having to stop to continue to write on the board.

In the transformative state of the SAMR model (modification and redefinition), Prezi create an opportunity to incorporate videos, diagrams, text and images all in the one place. By not having to shift between different sites or ICT’s it will allow for a more streamlined lesson. Once your lesson has been created you can save it and keep it for future classes it is easy to modify the presentation if needed.

After investigating all three tools I found that the Prezi was most suited to my teaching areas. The Glogster and PowerPoint can also be used however; Prezi was more interesting and interactive.

With any ICT that is being used for classroom lessons or student’s assignments the awareness of copyright issues needs to be addressed. With PowerPoint, Prezi and Glogster it is simple to use a YouTube video or picture from the internet in the presentation. Referencing these video and pictures is just as important as referencing a quote taken from a text book. Students need to be aware that all form of text and print, no matter the format needs to reference in the presentations. As teachers, we should be no different. We need to reference the videos and text that we may use in our class lessons to set an example.

Students also need to be aware of cyber safety using these tools. If a student is creating their own account they need to be mindful of not releasing any private information such as their name and address. All ICT tools are great for students to use; they need to be used with safety in mind.
